After spending five months in hospitals due to a dirt bike accident, 13-year-old Brevyn returned home after surviving a catastrophic motorbike accident, welcomed by a literal parade in his hometown of Gladwin, Michigan.

At 12 years of age, Brevyn was an incredible athlete working hard towards becoming a professional dirt bike rider. The kid was doing all the right things, which included putting in the time practicing. He was at the track with his father, Kory Willford, preparing for an upcoming weekend competition when Brevyn lost control of his bike.

“He’s been on the track a bunch of times, but this time, one jump got him,” Kory told us about the fall. “He landed with his back wheel down and [the force] flung him forward over the handlebars. He hit the ground very hard.”

Although he was wearing a helmet and all the appropriate protective gear, Brevyn sustained a traumatic brain injury that put him in critical condition almost immediately. He was quickly transferred to a nearby hospital and placed in intensive care.

Brevyn endured significant physical and neurological trauma following his accident. However, three years down the road, he's steadfastly working towards reclaiming the pleasures of his teenage years. Fortunately, Brevyn's injury didn't lead to lasting cognitive impacts. Nonetheless, he continues to grapple with mobility challenges, rendering him unable to walk without assistance. A notable repercussion of his injury is the discontinuation of his sports involvement, resulting in the unfortunate absence of numerous social interactions with friends. His current condition has created unpredictable hurdles in navigating day-to-day life.

It's easy to understand that this recovery journey has been particularly tough on Brevyn, who used to be an incredibly active teenager. The transition from engaging in sports practices to undergoing daily physical and speech therapy has posed its own set of challenges.

“We’re farmers. We’ve got a river property on the other side of our farm where our cows are. We go down there and go fishing and relax,” Kory told us. “We’re trying to get him a little 10x16 cabin down there for Brevyn to be able to hang out with his friends, but everything cost a lot these days.”

Ever since the accident, Brevyn’s parents having been working hard to give Brevyn a better quality of life. Part of that, is wanting to gift Brevyn a place he can feel like a normal teenager again—like a custom camp shed.

“We can put a bed in there for him and his wheelchair could wheel right in there,” Kory added. “He’ll be able to head down to the river with his friends without my help, which is something he wants. Right now when we’re by the river, he needs to depend on us too much. He don’t like that.”

After some wonderful conversations with Brevyn’s parents, Holton’s Heroes agreed to gift Brevyn his own custom camp shed, complete with windows, a door and an entry ramp.

Holton’s Heroes believes this gift can offer a multitude of benefits that can help Brevyn’s overall well-being. The new camp shed will provide a safe and accessible space for Brevyn to socialize and foster a sense of inclusion, therefore combating any feelings of isolation Brevyn might have been feeling these past few years.

In addition to the privacy and sense of independence this shed offers, spending time in his new custom camp shed surrounded by nature will hopefully provide a therapeutic escape from his daily challenges while promote relaxation and emotional healing.
